The pipa, a plucked string instrument, is a prominent plucked string instrument. Made of wood, its sound box is semi-pear-shaped and holds four strings, originally made of silk but now often made of steel wire, steel rope, or nylon. The neck and top are marked with "xiang" and "frets" to determine pitch. Played upright, the left hand presses the strings while the right hand plucks the five fingers. It is an important folk instrument that can be played solo, in accompaniment, in duets, or in ensembles. The pipa is a traditional East Asian plucked string instrument with a history of over 2,000 years. The earliest instrument known as "pipa" appeared around the Qin Dynasty in China. The "jue" in the Chinese character "pipa" means "two jades colliding, producing a pleasant sound," indicating that the instrument produces sound by plucking the strings. The names "pi" and "pa" are derived from the right-hand technique used to play these instruments. In other words, "pi" and "pa" were originally the names of two different playing techniques: "pi" involves plucking with the right hand forward, while "pa" involves plucking with the right hand backward. Before the Tang Dynasty, "pipa" was also the Chinese term for all plucked instruments of the lute family (also known as the lute family). The Chinese pipa spread to other parts of East Asia, developing into the current Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese pipa.

In the history of modern Chinese folk music, there are two major schools of pipa: the "Haipai" (Pudong) school and the "Zhejiang" (Pinghu) school. The Pinghu school of pipa art holds considerable historical value for the study of folk music history.
